New York, NY (December 22, 2022) – Committee of 100, a non-profit U.S. leadership organization of prominent Chinese Americans, today issued the following statement in celebration of Committee of 100 Member Dr. Jay Xu being appointed to serve on the commission to study the potential creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture. The announcement was made on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Dr. Xu is Director and CEO of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and has been a Member of Committee of 100 since 2010. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Xu was the first Chinese American director at a major U.S. art museum, and the first Asian American museum director elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
“Given the complex process of establishing a national museum, this commission requires expertise in not only Asian American art and museum administration but also civic leadership and fundraising. Dr. Xu’s career and scholarship have demonstrated his abilities in these areas,” said Gary Locke, Chair, Committee of 100. “As a long-time member of Committee of 100, Dr. Xu has been instrumental in helping fashion the Committee’s work to present Chinese and Chinese American art and culture to the broader American public and is the perfect choice for the committee.”
On June 13, President Biden signed into law the establishment of a commission to study the creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture on the National Mall. Read the statement by Committee of 100 on the signing of that bill into law here.
“Chinese American history is American history. Knowledge of that history, the challenges we faced, and the contributions we made are critical to American society,” said Zhengyu Huang, President, Committee of 100. “For nearly 200 years, the AAPI community has made impactful contributions to the U.S., but Asian Americans continue to fight against being seen as the perpetual foreigner. Dr. Xu is the perfect choice to be a part of this Commission to move this exciting concept forward.”
