New York, NY (July 1, 2021) — Yesterday, Representative Jamie Raskin, Chair of the Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and Representative Judy Chu, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), held a roundtable entitled “Researching while Chinese American: Ethnic Profiling, Chinese American Scientists and a New American Brain Drain.” Committee of 100 had formal comments submitted for the record and today issued the following statement:
“Biased prosecution of American scientists of Chinese descent hurts American research and competitiveness and ruins the lives and careers of Americans who are unfairly prosecuted,” said Zheng Yu Huang, President of Committee of 100. “We must balance national security with civil liberties and America’s ability to continue to attract the world’s best talents. Racial profiling is antithetical to all these goals.”
In 2017, Committee of 100 issued its white paper “Prosecuting Chinese Spies: An Empirical Analysis of the Economic Espionage Act,” which provides empirical evidence that Asians in America may be facing unfair and increasing racial profiling in the U.S. government’s campaign to crack down on theft of economic trade secrets. The white paper published the independent research of Andrew Chongseh Kim, Visiting Scholar at South Texas College of Law and defense attorney at Greenberg Traurig LLP. Committee of 100 and Mr. Kim plan to release an updated version of the research this fall.
