New York, NY (May 12, 2023) — Committee of 100, a non-profit organization of prominent Chinese Americans, released a statement today strongly objecting to Florida Senate Bill 264, recently signed into law by the Governor of Florida. The new law will ban citizens, governments, and entities from China, Russia, Iran, Korea, and Cuba, from purchasing land in Florida.
Florida Senate Bill 264 follows Texas Bill 147 which also prohibits Chinese nationals from buying land unless they are American citizens or permanent residents.
“Committee of 100 strongly opposes Florida Bill 264 because it is discriminatory, xenophobic and unamerican,” said Zheng Huang, President of Committee of 100. “There are legitimate national security concerns related to foreign ownership of critical infrastructure, but this law goes far beyond that protection by prohibiting any Chinese resident who is not a U.S. citizen or green card holder from purchasing land. The Florida law is saying that immigrants who come to the U.S. in pursuit of the American dream can’t buy a house or farm for their families, and that is un-American.”
Committee of 100 is a non-profit, U.S.-based membership organization of prominent Chinese Americans founded more than 30 years, founded at the urging of Dr. Henry Kissinger. Some of Committee of 100’s Members are from the states of Texas and Florida, respectively.
