New York, NY (December 22, 2021) – Committee of 100 is endorsing Dr. David Ho, longtime Committee of 100 member and pioneer in AIDS/HIV research, to be nominated as the next Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Ho has been with Committee of 100 since 1990, part of the very first group of Members that helped shape the organization. Dr. Ho currently serves as the founding scientific director and CEO of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at Columbia University and is leading a team of scientists to identify new therapies and interventions to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Dr. Ho is one of the world’s leading medical minds and an American of the highest personal character. He would be an ideal choice for this very important and challenging job,” said Gary Locke, Former Governor of Washington, Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Former U.S. Ambassador to China, and current Committee of 100 Chair. “The U.S. will benefit greatly from his leadership, as will people around the world who will depend on future medical breakthroughs from research-led and funded by NIH. I have worked closely with Dr. Ho for years and know firsthand that he would be an invaluable and dynamic leader of NIH.”
“Given the rise in anti-Asian hate and sentiment, it is critical that Asian Americans have representation across the U.S. government,” said Zheng Yu Huang, President of Committee of 100. “Dr. Ho has been serving underserved communities throughout his career and is eminently qualified to hold the position of Director of the National Institutes of Health, and we highly encourage the nominating committee to move forward with his selection.”
