New York, New York – Committee of 100, a nonpartisan Chinese American organization, today issued the following statement in full support of the Hispanic community and denouncing the language used by Tony Hinchcliffe at the Republican Party political rally in New York City yesterday.
“We at Committee of 100 are outraged at the verbal attacks and jokes being directed at the Hispanic community and the island of Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States. The Chinese American community knows all too well about being on the receiving end of hate, xenophobia and negative stereotypes. We deeply empathize with the Hispanic Americans whose lives could be affected by these troubling comments. Words have consequences. As a society, we cannot stand by and let racially charged language about minorities persist. There is no room for hate in our country. What Tony Hinchcliffe said was wrong and racist. We must ensure that negative language like this does not go unchecked.”
