The Honorable Cliff Stearns (R-FL, 1989–2013), incoming Chairman of the USAFMC, welcomed more than 40 participants, including former Members of Congress, Congressional Staff, members of the diplomatic corps, and other distinguished stakeholders.

The panel discussion was moderated by C-100 Chair Frank H. Wu. The three distinguished panelists were Ambassador Robert R. King, U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues, Susan Lawrence, Specialist in Asian Affairs, Congressional Research Service, and Scott Snyder, Senior Fellow for Korea Studies, Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Wu opened the panel discussion by quoting the latest news concerning the nuclear attempts of North Korea. The panelists took turns to discuss historical and current U.S.-China cooperation under different frameworks to maintain peace in the region, and the implication these collaborations have on the broader U.S.-China relations.

The panel discussion was followed by a brief question and answer session, during which the audience raised insightful questions and engaged in discussions with the panelists. Towards the end of the event, the Honorable Cliff Stearns (R-FL, 1989–2013) suggested a follow-up briefing on the South China Sea issue to further examine the U.S.-China cooperation in the Asia Pacific region.

The Hon. Jim Slattery (D-KS, 1983 to 1995), former Congressman from Kansas, and the Hon. William H. Zeliff (R-NH, 1991-1997), former Congressman from New Hampshire also participated in the briefing. C-100 Executive Director Holly Chang attended the briefing as well.

This briefing is part of C-100’s national Speakers Forum Series, a high-level platform that addresses major issues in U.S.-China relations and the Asian American community. Please find an executive summary here.
