Oscar L. Tang is committed to supporting institutions that promote excellence in education, art and culture, and advanced studies in Chinese civilization. In 2005, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was appointed to the New York State Council on the Arts from 2000 to 2004 and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities from 1990 to 1993.
 
In addition to serving as Co-Chairman of the New York Philharmonic, Mr. Tang serves on the boards of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and United States Bobsled and Skeleton Foundation. He is a founding member and Governor of the Committee of 100. He is a trustee emeritus of Phillips Academy Andover, where he was a trustee from 1995 to 2012 and Board President from 2004 to 2012. He founded the Tang Institute at Andover, Tang Center for East Asian Art at Princeton, Tang Center for Early China at Columbia, and Tang Center for Silk Road Studies at UC Berkeley.
 
Mr. Tang is a private investor. He is retired from Reich & Tang, an asset management firm he co-founded and served as President and CEO for over 20 years. In 1987, Reich & Tang L.P. became the first publicly traded investment management limited partnership when it listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1993, New England Investment Companies merged into Reich & Tang to form Nvest, L.P. Nvest, L.P. managed over $130 billion of client assets when it was acquired in 2000 by CDC Asset Management, a subsidiary of Caisse des Depots et Consignations.

Mr. Tang was born in Shanghai. In 1949, at the end of the Chinese civil war, his parents fled to Hong Kong. He was sent to school in the United States at the age of 11 and subsequently attended Phillips Academy, Andover. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Yale University and an MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School.
