Statement from Committee of 100 on Candidates of AAPI Descent Winning Election in the 2022 Midterms

9th November 2022

New York, NY (November 9, 2022) – Committee of 100, a non-profit membership organization of prominent Chinese Americans, released the following statement on candidates of AAPI descent winning elections at the Federal, State and Local level in the 2022 midterm elections.

“The Chinese American and AAPI community have traditionally been underrepresented in elected offices across the U.S.,” said Zhengyu Huang, President of Committee of 100. “Committee of 100 congratulates all the candidates of AAPI heritage who won their respective elections. With more AAPI representation in office, we can work with leaders across America to address issues we deeply care about such as anti-Asian hate, racial profiling, and the bamboo ceiling.”

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up more than 6% of the U.S. population and are one of the fastest-growing demographic – yet according to research hold less than 1% of all elected offices. (1)
