San Francisco is the latest city to acknowledge a past of anti-Asian hate
New York, NY (February 2, 2022) — The following statement was issued today by Zhengyu Huang, President of Committee of 100, in regard to the city of San Francisco passing a resolution apologizing to Chinese Americans for the city’s role in historical racism.
“Committee of 100 congratulates the decision by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to pass the resolution to publicly apologize to Chinese Americans on behalf of the city for its racist past. For nearly two centuries, Chinese Americans and the AAPI community have had to deal with racism, xenophobia, and violence– challenges that continue to this day. This is a step in the right direction and a teaching moment, allowing the city of San Francisco – and the nation – to continue to learn and heal from the errors of the past.”
San Francisco is one of the latest cities to recognize the racial intolerance that early Asian immigrants faced in seeking a life in America. The city of San Jose apologized in September 2021 for its racist past against Chinese immigrants, and in May 2021, the city of Antioch, California, passed a similar resolution apologizing for forcibly driving Chinese residents out of town in 1876, as did the city of Los Angeles last year.
