Flushing, NY (August 14, 2024) – Committee of 100, Documented, and Glow Cultural Center are thrilled to announce the Immigrant Rights Fair, a community event dedicated to providing essential resources, legal advice, and support to immigrants. The event will take place on Saturday, August 24th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glow Cultural Center, located at 133-29 41st Ave, 1st Floor, Flushing, NY 11355.
The Immigrant Rights Fair is aimed to be an inclusive and informative event, featuring workshops, informational booths, and access to legal resources. The event serves as a platform to celebrate and support the immigrant community, raise awareness about immigrant rights and offer a space where immigrants can gain valuable insights and assistance. In addition, participants will receive free gifts, resource guidebooks, and refreshments (limited-time).
The event is free and welcomes Chinese and AAPI immigrant families and individuals in the Flushing neighborhood. Local community leaders, partner organizations, and city agencies, including the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, NYC Commission on Human Rights, the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY), Community Legal Aid Center (CLAC), Asian American Attorneys Association (AAAA) and Chinese-American Planning Council, will also join the event.
Key activities at the fair will include two workshops and several resource booths. The first workshop, “Report for Support—AAPI Hate Tracker Introduction,” will be presented by Committee of 100. It will define AAPI hate and emphasize the importance of reporting these incidents. Additionally, it will introduce the recently announced AAPI Hate Tracker database, launched in conjunction with The Asian American Federation (www.aapihatetracker.org), which allows the public in the New York City area to report incidents of hate and violence.
The second workshop, “Immigrant Rights Tea & Talk: Myths about the ‘Public Charge’ Policy and How the Presidential Election Would Affect It,” will be presented by Documented and address whether applying for government benefits impacts immigration status. The workshop will take place in a lively environment where guests can enjoy complimentary tea and snacks and discuss their concerns as immigrants.
Cindy Tsai, Interim President of Committee of 100, stated, “Chinese Americans and the at-large AAPI population are underserved in healthcare, education, and social services. To help address these gaps in the communities, Committee of 100 is thrilled to partner with Documented and Glow Cultural Center on the Immigrant Rights Fair to bring important resources and actionable information to the community. These collaborative partnerships are vital. By working together, we amplify our voice, maximize the impact of our resources, and create a stronger, more supportive network to address the unique challenges API immigrants face.”
Mazin Sidahmed, Co-Executive Director of Documeted, said, “More than half of the API community live in Queens. On Aug 24, we are thrilled to cooperate with Committee of 100 and Glow Cultural Center to bring our work to immigrants at this event in Flushing. Special thanks to Google for helping to support this important event. API New Yorkers are critical in virtually every aspect of our city, and today represent the fastest-growing community in the city due to the recent influx of new immigrants. Documented is dedicated to filling information gaps among immigrants in New York. Our community correspondent, April Xu, responds to community members’ needs, shares critical news and information about available resources and services, combats mis- and disinformation, and conducts investigative and beat reporting in Chinese and English.”
Jerry Lo, Co-President of Glow Cultural Center, said, “Glow Cultural Center is honored to collaborate with esteemed organizations such as Committee of 100 and Documented to provide crucial resources on combating anti-Asian discrimination, immigrant rights, and legal support to the Flushing community. August 24th marks Glow Cultural Center’s inaugural ‘Summer Community Day,’ featuring free legal consultations and resources, school supplies, and Queensboro Dance Festival performances. We invite residents to join us, experience the diverse cultural charm of Queens up close, and enjoy a refreshing summer day!”
