New York, NY (June 19, 2024) — Committee of 100, a non-profit membership organization of prominent Chinese Americans, today issued the following statement on the celebration of Juneteenth. The federal holiday represents the events of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger was deployed to Galveston, Texas to inform the community that the Civil War had ended, and that slavery had been abolished after nearly 250 years.
“As we commemorate Juneteenth, Committee of 100 stands in solidarity with the Black community, recognizing this significant day in American history. Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and acknowledges the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality. This day serves as a poignant reminder of our shared histories and collective responsibility to combat racism and injustice. On this Juneteenth, we honor the resilience and contributions of the Black community and reaffirm our commitment to standing together in the fight against all forms of hate and oppression.”
