Cher Wang has an enviable record in the electronics industry. Her strategic insight into technology trends and entrepreneurship has enabled her to establish a number of highly successful IT-related businesses. She is currently the chairwoman of two Taiwan-listed companies, and on the board of directors of or advisor to numerous other enterprises.
Wang co-founded HTC Corporation in 1997 with the aim of making the convergence of mobile computing and communications a reality. Under her chairmanship, HTC pioneered the smartphone market, and has consistently been first to market with new technologies, including new wireless generations and the touch interface, as well as Microsoft® Windows Mobile and Android. Today, HTC has broadened its vision to fully enable the connected lifestyle, leveraging its world-class design and engineering resources to innovate on new cutting edge experiences such as virtual reality, with the advanced HTC VIVE leading the way in consumer virtual reality systems, platforms and software, and is now embracing the next stage of the internet with VIVERSE, its version of the metaverse. In 2015, Wang took over as CEO of HTC to drive the new vision of VIVE Reality as the Company entered its next phase of development.
In 1992, Wang founded and was chairwoman of VIA Technologies, Inc., which went on to supply around half of the global PC market with core logic chipsets before expanding into complete energy-efficient processor platforms. Today, VIA is connecting businesses to advanced AI, IoT, and computer vision technology through innovative smart solutions for transportation, industrial, and smart city applications, and has won accolades for anticipating early the drive for power efficiency and for pioneering small form factors at both the silicon and platform level.
Previously, Wang was General Manager of the PC Division at First International Computer, Inc. (FIC), and was instrumental in driving that business unit into the lucrative motherboard market.
Wang has built her companies on the core tenet of relentless innovation by persistently striving to go beyond boundaries, and has embraced the pursuit of brilliance as a never-ending journey. HTC has epitomized this vision. In its 24 years of existence, HTC has been widely recognized as a global innovator in smart mobile devices and technology, garnering many awards and industry acclaim, from its smartphones through to its VIVE virtual reality platforms.
Wang is active in the international business community, participating in the World Economic Forum and on the APEC Business Advisory Council for many years. She has been widely recognised for her business achievements; she was selected as an Innovator in the 2005 Stars of Asia: 25 Leaders on the Forefront of Change by Business Week and named as one of the ‘ten executives to watch’ in Asia. In 2011, Wang was named ‘the most powerful woman in wireless’ by Forbes and one of the most influential women by Fast Company, and has regularly featured in Fortune’s annual ‘most powerful women’ list. She was also awarded ‘Person of the Year’ by CCTV in China. Her business achievements have also been acclaimed in major international media, including the New York Times and the Financial Times.
A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, Wang is a devout Christian, and is married with two children.
