Nelson is an Of Counsel in Dorsey & Whitney’s Government Solutions and Investigations practice and is co-head of its National Security Law practice. He has substantial experience in counseling e-commerce, semiconductor, electronics, computer hardware and software, and biomedical and biotechnology companies, research universities and other research organizations and engineering societies with special expertise in domestic and international technology licensing, outsourcing and manufacturing supply chains in Asia, and U.S. export control and economic sanctions compliance matters.
He has frequently written and taught about U.S. export control and economic sanctions laws, technology related business transactions between the U.S. and Asian or European countries, international strategic alliances, U.S. national security reviews of foreign direct investments in technology companies throughout the United States and around the world. He serves on the boards of directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations in New York City and the Washington State China Relations Council in Seattle and is an advisor to the Asia Society of Northern California in San Francisco. He is an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City and is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu. He is also an associate member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) in Washington DC.
He has been appointed twice to serve on the U.S. Commerce Department’s President’s Export Council Subcommittee on Export Administration (PECSEA). He was selected as a White House Fellow during the Carter Administration, serving as Special Assistant to U.S. Attorney General Griffin B. Bell and, later, as Deputy Associate Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice. He was also a federal prosecutor in Boston, Massachusetts. Nelson has been named a “Trailblazer” by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).
Nelson is a graduate of Stanford University and the Yale Law School. He has also served as a trustee of Stanford University.
