Statement from Committee of 100 on Katherine Tai’s Confirmation as U.S. Trade Representative
New York, NY (March 18, 2021) — The following statement was issued today by Zheng Yu Huang, President of Committee of 100:
“The Committee of 100 congratulates Katherine Tai on being confirmed as the next U.S. Trade Representative. The fact that Ms. Tai was approved by the U.S. Senate 98-0 marks a rare bipartisan agreement and solidifies the fact that she is eminently qualified for the role.
Back on February 23, Committee of 100 sent an open letter to Chairman Wyden, Ranking Member Crapo and the members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance expressing Committee of 100’s full support for the confirmation of Ms. Tai as U.S. Trade Representative.
The Committee of 100 is pleased that our country’s new U.S. Trade Representative reflects the diversity of our great nation. Moreover, Ms. Tai’s appointment and confirmation represents the first time in U.S. history a Chinese American has been conferred to this important role, and the first time for any woman of color. Her service will be an important signal to the world that the United States is committed to including all voices and recognizing the contributions of communities of color.
With the increasing xenophobia and violence taking place in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, this is a moment to reflect, celebrate Ms. Tai’s confirmation, and encourage the Biden-Harris Administration to continue its efforts to nominate more Chinese Americans and members of the AAPI community to positions that showcase the diversity of our great nation.”
